I don't know the man but I bet Cleo Lemon woke up Saturday morning in pain. After all, he was only sacked seven times. It was a rough day in the pocket for Lemon who was forced to use his legs on numerous occasions, including a nine yard scamper in the third for Toronto's only major on the day. After Cory Boyd left with a knee injury that will sideline him for two to three weeks, Cleo Lemon led the Argos on this day in rushing. In two words: not good.
Rushing wasn't the only problem for the Boatmen. The team did not record a passing touchdown on the day. How much of that was the inefficieny of the receiving corps and how much was the O-line letting everyone and their uncle behind the line remains to be seen. Either way, it's an issue which needs addressing before the Argos travel to Montreal this week. To their credit, when the Argos needed first downs, the receivers stepped up moving the chains twelve of the team's fourteen times.
Drops, fumbles and penalties down the stretch really hurt the Argos. The team fumbled the ball seven times over the evening and only recovered four. In addition, they gave up nearly an entire football field in penalties with twelve for 95 yards. Not a great performance.
How bad does this look for the Argonauts? The Bombers haven't started a season with two wins since 2003 and haven't beat the Argos since 2009. This week needs to be a hardcore focus on throwing and catching the football. If the Boyd-less offense doesn't get their act together in practices this week, it will be a long evening in Montreal next week. If they can't pull it together then, it could be the end of the road for Jaime Elizondo (Argos' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach) in Toronto.
NOTES: In addition to Cory Boyd, the Argos' Kevin Eiben missed practice on Monday with a calf injury. There is no word on severity or timeframe for a return. The team also announced Jason Pottinger will undergo surgery on his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.
