Heart-attack Stamps hang on against Bombers
| Written by: PodcasterRyan @ CFL Insider

I'm not going to pretend I wasn't pacing across my living room, teaching my two-year-old son several new curse words, during the Stamps latest game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Time after time, the offense would come on the field and leave after a weak showing which was highlighted by several broken-up passes. It was, to be gentle, a very sub-par afternoon from reigning CFL MOP Henry Burris.

17-32 in passing with just 178 yards is not the kind of outing the Stampeders have become accustomed to from their QB who has a smile a mile wide but a qb rating on the season of just 78.8. That rating is good enough to put him in the company of Cleo Lemon, Travis Lulay and a few others while it is a far cry from the numbers being put up by Ricky Ray and Anthony Calvillo.

Elsewhere the numbers were equally disappointing with Joffrey Reynolds leading the rushing attack with a paltry 40 yards. While that did prove Bombers DL Odell Willis wrong when he said that they could handle Reynolds even better than Cory Boyd who was held to just 17 yards, 40 is still not enough.

There is something to be said for getting the job done against what is proving to be a very much improved Bomber defense which leads the league in several categories this year so far. As yet though, we still have not seen the dominant offensive attack that paced the CFL last season despite having the majority of starters returning.

The bright spot for the team was the defense. Keon Raymond had one of his best outings as a Stampeder with a pick-six inteception for a touchdown and a fumble recovery that led to the Stamps lone offensive touchdown on the day.

Buck Pierce was knocked from the game in what can only be described as an eventuality at this point in his career although it does look like the quad contusion suffered won't keep him out for longer than just the second half of last weeks contest.

Next up for the Stamps is a battle for first place with the Eskimoes who sit 3-0 on the season, which seems less impressive when you consider their opponents are a combined 1-8 with the only win coming when two of the teams played each other last weekend.

Ricky Ray has looked like the Frito Ray of old while racking up some impressive numbers and it will be up to the Stamps D to shut him down.

Did I mention the Riders are 0-3?

Laters,
