Thank goodness it’s just the pre-season.

In a game that really shouldn’t have been as close as it wound up being a 23-22 win for the Riders we were able to get a look at some fresh faces for both Edmonton and Saskatchewan. Kerry Joseph got the start for the Esks and looked like a man that hasn’t played a meaningful down of football in over a year; he went 3 for 9 with 32 yards and just looked awful. The Roughriders were able to put up a 15-0 lead early on the board with a rushing TD from Wes Cates and a punt return TD from Hugh Charles along with a single kicked by Chris Milo. Edmonton was able to make it interesting once the 1st quarter ended thanks to a rushing touchdown from Calvin McCarthy and a passing TD by Matt Nichols to Youssy Pierre. Nichols, Eric Ward and Eric Mueller looked good under Centre in the game, although Mueller (3 for 3, for 45 yards passing) was cut and will be going back to the CIS and the University of Regina Rams this season. Slotback Jason Barnes who came back from a ruptured spleen last season was able to make a big catch with under 10 seconds renaming in the 4th with the score 23-21 Riders to put the Esks into field goal range to win the game but Derek Schiavone's 55 yard field goal as time ran out had the distance but not the accuracy as it went wide right into the end zone and the single as Saskatchewan got the 23-22 win.

The Eskimos wrap up the preseason vs Calgary at Commonwealth on June 24th and the Roughriders take on the BC Lions on June 22nd in Vancouver.
